I am a senior lecturer in Geographic Information in the Department of Information Science with research expertise in interactive cartography, geovisualization and information visualization. I have developed a number of innovative and interactive visualization techniques and applications and published research papers on geovisualization and information visualization - many are listed below. Notable software and techniques include the cartographic visualization application 'cdv', the panoraMap software that supports visualization through georeferenced panoramic imagery, 'geowigs', spatially ordered treemaps and the HiVE expression language. Much of my work is available through the giCentre website.
Co-chair of the ICA Commission on Geovisualization, I have been an active contributor to the ICA Commission on Visualization and Virtual Environments over the years, coordinating the 2002 international colloquium and editing the multi-disciplinary "Exploring Geovisualization" (Dykes, MacEachren and Kraak, 2005).
I am an Editorial Board member of Computers Environment and Urban Systems and The Cartographic Journal and a member of the Programme Committee for IEEE VAST. I am a member of the Organizing Committee of IEEE Information Visualization and have served on the Programme Committee. I have been heavily involved in the teaching and organisation of the various giCentre courses in Geographic Information and was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship by the Higher Education Academy in 2005.
I have authored the 'Best Paper' at the GIS Research UK meetings in 2007, 2008, 2009 & 2010 for innovative visualization work with various colleagues with whom I have achieved an 'Honorable Mention' at InfoVis 2009 and won an award at the 2009 VAST challenge.
I am personal tutor to undergraduate Computer Scientists.

recent news ... VRERI kick-off meeting [link : chronological record of 'recent news' and activity]
Jo, Aidan and I recently attended the kick-off meeting for the JISC funded VRE Rapid Innovation programme at the University of London.
I gave a short presentation on our plans for vizTweets which we are implementing rapidly!
The event was a useful showcase of VRE RI projects and formed part of JISC's dev8D developer days.
