giCentre - Department of Information Science

Recent estimates suggest that 80% of information has a geographic component - a postcode, a mobile phone cell, or a GPS coordinate for example. Accordingly, a diverse range of information rich businesses and organisations are increasingly using geography as a central means of managing their information - knowing what is where is key to this activity. GIS researchers at City are contributing to the development of knowledge and practice that supports this approach. Our globally renowned team can help you learn about using GI and GIS through a range of educational offerings. Their research expertise in GIS, databases, information management, spatial programming, visualization, requirements engineering and location-based services and experience in GIS education will enable you to develop your GI skills and knowledge.

Teaching Staff

  • Vesna Brujic-Okretic (Head of Department)

I teach Web Applications Development, also lead Multimedia and Research Methods module and supervise projects. I oversee teaching allocation and delivery in DIS as Head.

  • Jason Dykes

I am Director of the GIS and GIM courses and lead the DITA & Geovisualization modules. My teaching is informed by the latest research activity - being involved in academic conferences, review and debate enables me to keep my teaching up to date in a rapidly changing field. My modules have a strong applied emphasis with lots of practical work. I enjoy supervising dissertations in GIS and GeoVisualization.

  • David Mountain

I am Director of the Information Systems MSc and lead the GITA module. In GITA I try to keep ahead of the curve for GI technology and show how GISystems get used. I get my hands dirty on the fieldtrip where we consider the differences between GI and the real world it tries to represent. I show up in other modules covering some GIScience theory and being evangelical about LBS and the geoweb.

  • Jonathan Raper (Director of giCentre)

I teach Research Methods and Professional Issues to all postgraduates in the school using live interactive screencasting, and I compere the group presentations which are press conferences on live research issues in front of the whole class. I also bring my industrial experience to the teaching of Geographic Information Technologies and Applications to keep it relevant and up to date.

  • Jo Wood

I lead the GI Science and Java Spatial Programming modules allowing students to become GIS power-users and build exciting software applications. I teach statistics and information graphics on our research methods module helping students to use and analyse data more effectively. I am the School's Educational Development Associate, encouraging staff to take up innovative teaching methods.
