... better graphics, better presentation, better evidence, better decisions ...

More data is more accessible than ever before. Visualization provides scope for converting these data sets into knowledge and evidence that can inform decision making. However, knowing where and how to gain the necessary visualization skills can be difficult.

The giCentre at City University London offers cutting edge expertise in mapping and data visualization and is increasingly working with commercial organizations and government to make sense of large data sets through visualization.

Our Data Visualization Day has been designed to equip information professionals with guidance, ideas and skills relating to current visualization methods, approaches and technologies.

It will be beneficial to those who are analysing and presenting data in a range of public and private sector organizations by providing access to cutting edge visualization methods and examples of current best practice in a range of application areas.

giCentre Masterclasses are open to all.

Programme - full details

The day will consist of three sections :

  1. Context - established best practice for designing effective graphics
  2. Examples - effective visualization solutions and how to produce them
  3. Application - visualization in action / workshop / discussion

Each of the short example presentations will draw upon the guidance provided during the Context section and show how this can be applied through a common problem oriented and solution focused structure involving :

  1. Problem Statement and Data Description
  2. Presentation of Solution
  3. Evaluation of Solution
  4. Description of "How can I do it?"

Presenters - list and biographies

Presentations will be delivered by giCentre researchers and invited experts including Alan Smith of the Office for National Statistics and Alistair Edwardes of the new Spatial Analysis Unit at Communities and Local Government. Speakers will use their broad range of experience to discuss applications of maps and graphics in the presentation and analysis of data relating to customer insight, performance management and a diverse set of applications areas.

Workshop and Discussion

The day will end with a short workshop including a graphics challenge in which visualization skills will be applied to an example data set by attendees and the chance to discuss visualization ideas and issues with the presenters.

Refreshment and Resources

All attendees receive lunch, coffee, access to computing facilities and a resource pack describing the techniques discussed and their implementation.
