Information Studies Scheme

The Information Studies Scheme is a set of related Masters courses in the library/information area. They share a common course structure and have several modules in common. Students are usually able to transfer between courses of the scheme during their first term.

The Scheme is overseen by the Centre for Information Science, within City's Department of Information Science. Key staff are the Scheme Director, Lyn Robinson, and the Professor of Information Science, David Bawden. A number of other members of academic and visiting staff teach on Scheme courses.

The three courses of the Scheme are:

All the Scheme courses provide an introduction to information-related academic disciplines, and a preparation for a career in the information professions.The Information Science course, taught at City since 1967, is designed particularly for those interested in information provision in particular subject domains, and in technology applications. The Library Science course focuses on library/information services of various kinds, and on the move towards digital collections and environments. The IMCS course caters for those with a specific interest in information handling in arts and cultural organisations.

Important features of all Scheme courses are:

balance between academic rigour and professional relevance
teaching is research-based, emphasising the relevance of research for professional success
use of practitioner lecturers as well as academic staff
balance between face-to-face teaching, taking advantage of our central London location, and e-learning support
international outlook, with a possibility of study abroad
collaboration with the main information-sector recruitment agencies, to ensure course relevance and assist in graduate employment

All the Scheme courses are accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals. Our graduates have an excellent record of finding suitable jobs, and going on to successful careers; see some accounts from former students of the value of their study at City.

Placements are not a part of these courses, but students who wish to are usually able to obtain work experience (paid or voluntary), or to work with external organisations in completing assignments or carrying out a dissertation project.
